Create an automatic promotion

Run sales and automatic promotions

Outcome: Add a code-free discount or free-shipping offer without confusing it with coupons.

Choose an automatic sale type

  • Use a product or variant Sale Price for a temporary catalog price.
  • Use product or variant bulk tiers for quantity pricing on that product family.
  • Use Products → Sales for form-wide merchandise tiers, free shipping, and targeted automatic offers.
  • Use a Coupon Code block when the buyer must enter a code.

Automatic sales apply without a buyer-entered code.

Run a form-wide sale

  1. Select the Products block and open Sales.
  2. Name and enable the sale, then add product-subtotal or item-quantity tiers.
  3. Optionally choose a free-shipping subtotal and standard shipping method.
  4. Choose whether the merchandise tier keeps the better catalog result, stacks on catalog promotions, or replaces catalog promotions.
  5. Choose whether paid shipping upgrades remain available.
  6. Choose whether coupons and advanced automatic offers may apply while a sale benefit applies.
  7. Save and preview carts below, at, and above every threshold.

The one matching tier with the greatest exact savings wins. An equal-savings tie uses the higher threshold. Merchandise thresholds do not include shipping, add-ons, quote-after-order shipping, coupons, or payment surcharges.

In Stack mode, the tier qualifies and calculates from the discounted catalog subtotal. Keep the better and Replace calculate from regular catalog prices. Free-shipping-only sales keep catalog promotions and qualify from the discounted subtotal.

Free shipping applies only to the configured standard method. Add-ons stay paid, and quote-after-order methods are not made free automatically. Existing orders preserve the exact waived method price so later item edits can restore it if eligibility is lost; if that historical amount cannot be proved, the edit stops for review.

Build an advanced automatic offer

Under Advanced automatic offers, choose Simple setup or Advanced setup. Automatic offers use the same qualifying, reward, exclusion, schedule, limit, budget, and exact-cent rules as coupons, but the internal activation code is hidden from buyers.

Available designs include:

  • Whole-order, category, product, or variant discounts.
  • Separate qualifying and reward pools with independent exclusions.
  • Minimum eligible quantity and spend, which are cumulative when both are set.
  • Fixed amount once, fixed amount per eligible unit, lowest-priced N, highest-priced N, and repeating Buy X Get Y.
  • Best-value quantity tiers.
  • Gift with purchase and multi-requirement bundles.
  • Shipping discounts and payment-surcharge waivers.

Gift and separate bundle rewards must already be in the cart. Gift and bundle offers are always exclusive. See Create and control coupon codes for the complete reward and lifecycle definitions shared by both surfaces.

Use priority and stacking deliberately

Automatic offers default to Can combine. Eligible stackable offers can combine with each other and with stackable buyer-entered coupons.

An eligible exclusive automatic offer replaces stackable automatic offers when no buyer-entered code controls the set. If several exclusive automatic offers qualify, the highest numeric Sale priority wins; a stable identifier breaks a priority tie. An exclusive buyer code runs alone. Gift and bundle offers are always exclusive, regardless of the visible stacking selector.

The form-wide sale's Allow coupons and advanced offers setting is an additional gate. It blocks buyer coupons, seller manual discounts, and currently eligible advanced automatic offers only while that form-wide sale benefit applies.

Set limits, campaigns, and schedules

Total redemptions, per-customer redemptions, merchandise cap, and total promotion budget default to unlimited. Total-use limits count active orders. The budget includes merchandise, shipping, and waived surcharges. First-order-only eligibility uses the buyer's prior non-cancelled orders on that form.

Blank start means immediately and blank end means never. Times use the timezone shown by the editor. Campaign names group and search offers; they do not alter eligibility. Pausing an offer prevents new buyer activation but does not rewrite old orders.

Understand checkout and order edits

Checkout selects automatic offers from current definitions, recomputes the exact cart, and atomically reserves their use and budget with order, inventory, and payment state. If an old browser tab has stale prices or availability, the buyer must review the refreshed total.

The accepted order stores the selected offer and its exact rewarded items, amounts, rules, and eligibility evidence. Later catalog or offer changes apply to future orders, not the saved order. During a seller item edit, frozen automatic offers are recomputed from their saved rules and cannot be removed through the coupon picker. If the edited cart no longer qualifies, all merchandise, shipping, and surcharge benefits from that offer become inactive together.

Cancellation releases an active automatic-offer use and budget. Un-cancelling must re-reserve the exact offer and can fail when the definition is gone or current schedule, customer, use, or budget conditions no longer allow it.

Test the final result

Preview at least:

  • One eligible and one ineligible cart.
  • Every quantity or subtotal boundary.
  • A qualifier exclusion and a reward exclusion.
  • A tied or competing automatic offer.
  • A buyer-entered coupon when combination is allowed.
  • Shipping below and above a free-shipping threshold.
  • An edit that crosses back below a threshold.
